The Tenerife Cup is the name of the annual award given to the
entrant who has scored the most Total Points in our Dead Pool
contest. It was first awarded to the winner of the 1979 contest.
It is named for the city in the Canary Islands who's airport (Los Rodeos)
is noted for its air/ground control screwups: directing a 747 into the
side of a mountain; having two planes on a foggy runway, one crossing,
the other trying to take off (March 27, 1977; Pan American & KLM
jumbo jets full of German tourists; 583 killed). Sort of like
Detroit Metro during a blizzard or
power outage!
Since we don't have an actual "cup" to award, the winner receives a
certificate of award instead (yeah, we know, big whoop). Recipients of
